Following the successful launch of the NW Taxi Public Discourse three days ago, MEC for the Department of Community Safety and Transport Management, Sello Lehari led members of the Community, the district taxi Lekgotla at the Dr Ruth Segomotsi Mompati Banquet Hall in Vryburg.

Among attendees were Member of the Provincial Legislature, Honourable Freddy Sonakile, Naledi Municipality Mayor, Cllr Neo Schalk, Acting Head of Department, Molefi Morule, taxi industry role players and academics from the University of the North West.

It is here, where MEC Lehari reminded the taxi operators that the violence that characterized the industry is delaying them and only unity will lead to tangible changes. “When two brothers are fighting each other, only strangers will inherit their wealth. The industry which contributes a lot in the economy of the country cannot continue to operate on an informal basis”, said MEC Lehari.

“As we embark on this important consultative process, it will equally do justice to all the four thematic areas so that as we consolidate the provincial position, we could come out with clear position to influence the national discourse with regard to the direction that the future taxi industry could be shaped”.

MEC Lehari said the challenges facing this taxi industry cannot be ignored forever.

Giving support, member of Portfolio Committee on Public Works and Community Safety and Transport Management, Freddy Sonakile said it is Governments responsibility to ensure stability in the industry.
“Slowly but surely the taxi industry is beginning to find itself. Twenty six into democracy I’m happy that the taxi industry is beginning to make a contribution toward economic growth. We should have an inclusive and holistic approach to professionalisation of the taxi industry”, said Mr Sonakile.
Acting Head of the Department Mr Molefi Morule said the need for the formalisation of the industry is because conflicts can no longer be tolerated.

“These conflicts are often caused by those who always want to lead but don’t want to be led. This Lekgotla should ultimately lead to where the industry could fully play a role in the economic development of the country”, said Mr Morule.

The Lekgotla was later divided into four commissions which came up with ideas which formed part of the Provincial contribution to national Lekgotla.
